What is a microchip?
The microchip is a safe and complementary method to the mandatory license required by municipal regulations.
The microchip
The microchip is a very small capsule, the size of a grain of rice, containing a chip with a unique identification number. It is injected using a syringe between the shoulder blades of the dog or cat. At SPA des Cantons, microchip implantation is performed at the same time as animal sterilization. For those already sterilized, it is done during vaccinations. “The procedure is comparable to a vaccine injection; they may therefore feel slight discomfort for a few seconds, which will fade very quickly. This small device is therefore comfortable for the animal, and is also sterile and composed of biologically inert materials.
What is it for?
It is a permanent identification method. It is therefore impossible to lose a microchip since it remains in place for the animal’s entire lifetime without ever fading. The microchip is therefore an additional means of finding your animal if it leaves your home by mistake. It does not replace the mandatory license required by municipal regulations.
How does it work?
When a reader (scanner) is passed over the animal’s shoulders, the microchip is detected and reveals the animal’s identification number, which is internationally recognized. This number corresponds to the owner’s contact information contained in a database. The owner can therefore be quickly contacted to retrieve their animal if it should get lost and end up in a shelter or at a veterinarian’s office. It is NOT a satellite geolocation system; it does not allow you to find the location where the animal is.
It is your responsibility as the new owner to register your personal information in the microchip provider’s database on their website. As for us, we work with the provider EIDAP: www.eidap.com. You must have your unique number on hand as a reference (you will find this number on the tags given to you at the time of adoption). When registering, enter your personal email address and not that of SPA des Cantons.
What are your responsibilities?
It is your responsibility to notify EIDAP of any changes (phone number, owner’s address, or death of the animal) via email. It is important to know that you remain responsible for the animal as long as your changes have not been made in the microchip provider’s database.
What is the cost of a microchip?
The microchip is included in the adoption fee for your new companion adopted at SPA des Cantons. We also perform microchip implantation for your cats or dogs, by appointment only, at a cost of $50 + taxes. You can also inquire with your preferred veterinarian regarding the cost and procedure for microchip implantation at their clinic.
